Major surge in India core sector: September growth rate shatters previous records, know the surprising figures
Prime Echo News:-

New Delhi: India foundational infrastructure and industrial landscape have delivered a major positive turnaround that few market observers anticipated. Amid lingering concerns over an erratic monsoon and broader global slowdown fears, key domestic industries picked up rapid momentum, resetting growth trends recorded over the past two and a half years. Fresh production numbers released today by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry surprised market watchers, outpacing initial consensus projections by economists by a considerable margin.

1. Record momentum registered in September:

According to official figures, the Index of Eight Core Industries expanded by a robust 7.9 percent year-on-year in September 2026. This follows an upwardly revised growth rate of 5.9 percent recorded in August. Under the revised dataset, this performance stands as the highest annual growth recorded in 30 months since April 2024. Notably, in September 2025 of the previous year, the index recorded a modest 3.1 percent increase, making the current acceleration particularly solid.

2. Top contributing sectors to the upturn:

During September, six key industries posted strong positive numbers, lifting the aggregate index to notable highs:

Iron Ore mining production: 18.4 percent growth

Electricity generation: 11.4 percent growth

Coal production: 10.7 percent growth

Refinery Products: 10.3 percent growth

Cement output: 9.8 percent growth

Steel production: 4.9 percent growth

Among these indicators, the turnaround in coal extraction proved most striking. After contracting by 3.8 percent in August, coal staged a sharp rebound to deliver 10.7 percent expansion in September. Similarly, refinery products accelerated from 5.6 percent in August to 10.3 percent in September.

3. Contraction in three sectors highlights pressure points:

Despite overall headline strength, growth remained uneven across all segments, with three critical sectors recording negative prints:

Fertilizers production contracted sharply by 11.7 percent.

Natural Gas output declined by 4.6 percent.

Crude Oil output recorded a modest contraction of 1.4 percent.

These contractions demonstrate that domestic upstream energy supply and agricultural input manufacturing continue to face persistent operational and production hurdles.

4. Six-month performance from April to September:

Across the first half of fiscal year 2026-27 spanning April to September, the Core Industries Index delivered a cumulative growth of 5.1 percent. During the corresponding six-month period of the prior fiscal year, growth stood at just 2.5 percent. Because these key sectors hold a substantial weight of approximately 40.27 percent in India Index of Industrial Production (IIP), this robust print provides meaningful reassurance for broader macroeconomic stability.

5. Market and economic implications:

The rebound across core industrial segments provides a constructive macroeconomic signal for domestic capital activity. However, financial analysts note that the trajectory of the broader equity market is never dictated by a single industrial data point. Equity benchmarks continue to track global crude pricing, movements in foreign institutional investor flows, second-quarter corporate earnings deliveries, and prevailing geopolitical variables across the globe.
