Mumbai: External Affairs Minister of India Dr S Jaishankar held a pivotal high-level bilateral meeting with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Mumbai today. Arriving in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon as part of his three-day visit to India, the US Secretary of State received a warm welcome. External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar expressed pleasure over the meeting with Secretary Rubio and reaffirmed the commitment to further elevate bilateral ties between the two democracies.
1. Focused discussions on trade, energy, technology, and defence cooperation:
During the discussions in Mumbai, leadership from both nations shared detailed perspectives on taking bilateral relations to new heights. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar noted that the core focus of the dialogue remained on strengthening trade, energy, technology, defence, and people-to-people ties. In addition, both leaders exchanged views on regional developments and broader international geopolitical affairs.
2. Marco Rubio terms India a refining superpower:
Following the bilateral engagement, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio lavished praise on India oil refining capabilities, terming the nation a refining superpower. He announced that the US delegation will engage in discussions with India leading private conglomerate Reliance regarding oil production in Venezuela. When asked by reporters about the role India can play in meeting global energy requirements, Rubio remarked that India is a refining superpower. He highlighted that India possesses specialized capabilities to process heavy crude oil. Noting that Indian refineries have performed this task successfully in the past, he expressed confidence that as Venezuelan crude flows into the market in larger volumes, this is an area where India can deliver exceptional value.
3. India oil concessions in Venezuela and the role of Reliance:
Marco Rubio told journalists in Mumbai that India already holds oil concessions in Venezuela through which it can directly extract more petroleum. He described these factors as highly encouraging. Rubio clarified that while he is not claiming Venezuela alone will resolve the entire global supply deficit, over time it can certainly do so, and in the near term it will provide meaningful relief.
4. Bilateral consensus on resolving sanctions-related bottlenecks:
The US Secretary of State stated that this is among the primary topics where dialogue will continue. He noted that the US has discussed the matter with India in the past, and India appears fully prepared and eager to pursue it. While acknowledging that certain compliance and sanctions hurdles could arise along the way, he emphasized that both nations will work collaboratively to navigate these issues. This meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscores that India-US cooperation in energy security and strategic alignment has entered a robust new chapter.
